Begona Echeverria conducted research in the “cathedral of libraries,” Oxford University’s Bodleian. Among its treasures is one of the rarest books in the world, a Basque New Testament published in 1571 by Joannes Leizarraga (‘Oxford, Bodleian Libraries, 8° T 6 Th.Seld.’) Commissioned by the Protestant Queen of Navarre, Jeanne d’Albret, it is one of few books that uses “noka,” the second person pronoun used with a female addressee. Above are images of the New Testament, including the passage where the Angel Gabriel tells the Virgin Mary: “Blessed Art Thou Among Women.”
